Carton Testing
The ideal packing line never stops
What can you do about poor cartons stopping a line?
The full costs of cartons failing to fold, crease or glue properly are often very high and include:
For the packager:
- Lost production from packing line downtime
- Wasted management & operator time sorting out problems
- Product wastage
- Lost profit

For the carton manufacturer:
- Remaking of cartons
- Wasted management & operator time sorting out problems
- The risk of losing a valued customer
- Lost profit

As well as the high financial costs, the impact on relationships between carton manufacturer and packaging company can become extremely strained leading to distrust and lost business.
So what can you do?
The key requirement is that cartons exhibit consistent folding/creasing properties so that filling lines can be set and operated without disruption.
Until now it has been impossible to accurately measure the properties of a crease or box as it is folded.
Now you can see what is happening to a crease or a folding box as they are folded, by using the brand new Newton Carton Tester.
The Newton Carton Tester gives you measurements for every degree of rotation of the crease or box as in this example.
Whether you are a packaging supplier or a packaging company, the Newton Carton Tester has Many Unique Features
- 4 Tests in 1 instrument - Unique
- Real time crease performance display - Unique
- Data stored in a historical database - Unique
The 4 tests performed by the Newton Carton Tester measure the key parameters determining the quality of the creases impressed into a carton and the friction between cartons.
Crease Strength – Measures the torque required to fold one crease eg end flap. Usually the peak torque is recorded, however the Newton Carton Tester also records the angle at which the peak torque was recorded and stores the torque at each angle of fold between 0o and 90o.
Spring back Force – Following the folding of a crease to 90o , this measures the torque exerted by a crease after the crease has been allowed to relax for a set number of seconds (usually 15).
Box Opening Force –This test measures the torque exerted by 4 creases being folded simultaneously. Again the peak torque and angle are recorded as per crease strength measurement.
Friction Test – This measures the friction or ‘slip angle’ of a carton or board. This impacts how cartons are automatically picked up before filling.
All of these parameters will have an impact upon how the carton performs when it is opened and filled on an automatic packing line.
