Packaging line downtime is very expensive for companies with automatic form and fill lines. That is why major multinationals use the Newton Crease & Friction Tester to set the crease strength and friction standards for incoming cartons. When suppliers test the crease strength of their cartons to ensure they are supplied to specification, packaging companies find downtime and packaging costs are reduced and customer service is improved.

An uninterrupted flow of cartons through automatic form and fill lines is dependent upon the quality of the creases impressed at the point of folding and the friction between the carton's surfaces. The quality of the crease is measured by the torque required to fold the carton. The ‘slip’ between adjacent flat cartons is measured by the co-efficient of friction. The Newton Crease & Friction Tester tests these two parameters.

The crease strength of larger cartons (up to 800mm long) can be measured without the need to cut through the crease in order to prepare a sample. Cutting though a crease has an effect upon its strength and thus reduces the accuracy of the measurement. The tester is unique in that it can measure the forces requires to erect a whole box (as shown in the photo).

A Crease Calibration Kit included with each instrument checks calibration and if necessary corrects in less than 5 minutes. This is essential when the carton manufacturer and packager are remote from each other.
